Woven Name Bracelets

About a week ago, I decided to try making some of the wrap bracelets with words that I have seen around.  People generally get them from street vendors in San Francisco or Mexico, but I wanted to try to make my own.  Unlike many things, a tutorial was not a quick Google away.  Why? I wondered. They can't be super difficult.

So I set to work with an empty milk jug and a bag of embroidery floss.  And matches.  For the first few, I tried to melt the ends and bend them over for a nice edge.  This was not the way to go!  Instead, I figured out that just wrapping all the way to the end worked well.

Below is a picture of the ones I have done so far.  Let me tell you, these are addictive little buggers!  I love them so much that I made some for my Etsy shop and plan to make many more.

Look, a zombie's arm!  Oh no, that's just me.  Not really sure why I appear to have a grey tinge...

  2. Hi,

These are made with plastic strips (cut from soda/milk containers) and embroidery floss. There are many tutorials on YouTube that you can find. For example, this one is extremely helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn23p7ms8yI

  3. How thick should the plastic strips be and how long?
Also, how do you end off the bracelet?
Thank you so much I've been trying to figure out how to make these for years

  4. Yeah, there aren't many resources on these bracelets!
I cut mine to be 5" by 3/8", but they can be any dimensions.
I have seen some people melt the end of the bracelet (if using acrylic--not cotton--thread). I punch a hole in the end of the bracelet and pull all the threads through, then wind the background around. I'm planning an in-depth tutorial, so stay tuned!

  5. can you custom make two bracelets small enough for baby girls with ties long enough to extend as they grow? could you weave their names or initials on them? if so, how can I contact you directly?

  7. For plastic strips: I use packing strap salvaged from shipping sources such as boxes of printing paper. Lighter weight but more convenient than cutting plastic.
